Gubbels qualifies for State
Woodbury junior ties for fourth on vault to earn trip to State meet; Royals take sixth at gymnastics sectional.

The Woodbury gymnastics team will be sending one member to the State meet this coming week as Vanessa Gubbels scored a 9.275 on vault to tie for fourth place at the Section 3AA meet on Friday and qualify for the Class AA championship competition to be held Feb. 26-27 at the University of Minnesota Sports Pavilion.
Gubbels will be Woodbury's lone representative at State as the Royals finished sixth overall as a team at the sectional — held at Lakeville North High School — with an overall score of 138.60.
"It was tough to compete like we should with all the injuries we have," coach Harvey Hammick said. "This is a tough section — the toughest in the state."
Erin Kohlbeck nearly joined her classmate at State, coming just one place short in taking fifth in the uneven bars with a score of 9.05.
Kohlbeck was also the Royals' top all-around performer, placing ninth overall in the category with a four-event score of 35.90 after finishing ninth on vault with a 9.225.
