Afton wind turbine discussions started up againDuring a Wednesday, Jan. 27 workshop the Afton City Council discussed possible development of a wind energy ordinance.
Wind turbines may be coming to Afton — but then again, maybe not.
During a Wednesday, Jan. 27 workshop the Afton City Council discussed possible development of a wind energy ordinance. The discussion was spurred by a resident who is interested in erecting a wind turbine on their property.
Last September council members heard a presentation regarding wind turbines from various experts in the field, but that was the last time they discussed the issue.
During the workshop, the council members did not arrive at a consensus opinion on the issue, rather they found that they had a lot of questions that needed to be answered.
Some of the concerns council members raised relating to wind turbines was the visual impact, the sound impact and possible harm to bird.
Council member Randy Nelson said he would like to see a more rustic, barn-style turbine as opposed to the modern metal ones.
The City Council decided to direct the issue to the planning commission for review and recommendation.
“We have a lot of people who are environmentally sensitive,” Nelson said. “Afton’s all about the environment.”
