Hays wins No. 100
Senior grappler hits milestone victory as Woodbury wrestlers take part in Bloomington Kennedy tourney.
Amidst his squad’s fourth-place finish at the Bloomington Kennedy Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 30, senior 189-pounder C.J. Hays won his 100th match as a member of the Woodbury wrestling team.
Hays, 28-0 on the season, picked up three victories at the tournament against wrestlers from Irondale, Kennedy and Champlin Park to hit the milestone.
Two days earlier, the WHS senior — ranked sixth in the Class AAA individual rankings at 189 pounds — earned two victories as the Royals hosted Hastings and Tartan in a triangular meet at Woodbury High School.
Woodbury split the evening’s matches on Thursday, Jan. 28, losing 56-18 to the fourth-ranked Raiders before topping the Titans, 45-27, in the nightcap.
In addition to Hays, picking up back-to-back victories in the three-team meet were Justin Herold-Plakut and Brandon Borchardt.
Herold-Plakut joined Hays with a 3-0 record at Kennedy on Saturday.
The Royals ninth-grade wrestlers took part in a regional tournament at Richfield High School on Saturday, with Howard Jones and Quinn Schmalz placing third and Dennis Ronne taking fifth.
