A group of Woodbury High School students have been recognized for their skills and talent in a variety of art areas after receiving 15 Minnesota Scholastic Art Awards.
“What this has done for our students is that it has helped them realize that someone else besides us really loves their work,” WHS art teacher Karen Seashore said. “It reinforces their chances of being successful in the future.”
Middle schools and high schools around Minnesota participate in the competition. This year, 1,151 students submitted artwork to be judged.
The 13 WHS students who received awards were recognized for their abilities in a variety of art areas — including painting, drawing, ceramics, computer art and photography — and seven of those students received silver and gold key awards which gives them a ticket to the MSAA Exhibition at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design.
The students who received MSAA merit awards are: Libby Anderson for computer art, Rachael Haley for ceramics and glass, Erin Nistler for painting, Bailey Oden for photography, Donny Reid for photography, Anna Schultz for ceramics and glass and Katherina Vang for computer art.
The students who received MSAA silver key awards are: Ben Alberts forceramics and glass, Alyssa Flemming for photography, Abby Kapler for painting, Joylin Munro for photography, Anna Schultz for ceramics and glass, Katherina Vang for computer art and Leah Williams for drawing.
WHS Abby Kapler received a gold key award for painting.
The Minnesota Scholastic Art Exhibition is open to the public daily from Jan. 22 to Feb. 21 at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design.
