District 833 sends out kindergarten registration packets

Should be received in the mail by Jan. 25

Families in South Washington County Schools with children who will be five years old on or before Sept. 1, 2010, are eligible for kindergarten in the fall of 2010.

The Office of Student Information of District 833 has mailed out kindergarten packets to families of eligible students on the district’s census.

The packet includes information about Kindergarten Enrollment Night, Immunizations, School Age Child Care, the K-plus (all-day kindergarten) Program, Nuevas Fronteras Spanish Immersion, transportation and enrollment forms.

Parents and their child are invited to attend Kindergarten Enrollment Night at their elementary school from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 22. The evening is intended as the opportunity to register for kindergarten, see the classrooms and visit with teachers and staff.

Completed forms may be returned to the school on enrollment night or mailed to the Office of Student Information, District Service Center, 7362 E. Point Douglas Road S., Cottage Grove, MN 55016.

If you do not receive a packet by Jan. 25, and your child is eligible for kindergarten next year, born on or before Sept. 1, 2005, contact the Student Information Office at (651) 458-6218.

Families who do not plan to send their eligible kindergartner to school in the fall or plan to enroll their child in a private or out-of-district program are asked to notify the Office of Student Information of their plans at (651) 458-6218.

Spanish Immersion kindergarten enrollment info

The 2010-11 school year will be the seventh year for Spanish Immersion in District 833. The Nuevas Fronteras Spanish Immersion program for kindergarteners is an all-day program.

Students learn to speak Spanish as a second language during their elementary experience, kindergarten through fifth grade.

The program is housed at Crestview Elementary School, 7830 80th Street So., Cottage Grove.

Students that do not speak Spanish at home will learn the district’s elementary curriculum and Spanish by being immersed in the language during the school day.

Details of the program will be available at the Spanish Immersion Parent Information Night at Crestview Elementary School, 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 26. You may also visit one of the Spanish Immersion classrooms at the school on Thursday, Jan. 28 between 9:30 and 10:30 a.m.

Registration for 2010 – 11 Nuevas Fronteras kindergarten students will be taken from Jan. 27 through Feb. 9 at the District Service Center. If there are more applicants than spaces available in the three kindergarten classrooms, a general blind lottery will be held. Families will be notified of their status no later than Monday, Feb. 22.
