WHS Girls Hoop
The Woodbury girls lost their first SEC contest in the battle of conference undefeateds as White Bear Lake, ranked fourth in the Class AAAA girls hoop poll, eked out a 40-39 victory to seize sole control of the league lead.
The Royals, who were paced by guard Michelle Young's 16 points, fell to 9-3 on the season and 6-1 in circuit play as the Bears improved to 13-2 overall and 7-0 in the SEC. Woodbury is now tied with Mounds View (11-2, 6-1) for second in the league. The Mustangs, winners of six in a row, host the Royals next Thursday.
WHS Boys Hoop
The Woodbury boys' agonizing stretch continued on Friday night as White Bear hung the sixth-straight loss on the Royals by a 74-68 score in overtime.
The Royals led by three with seconds to play, but a three-pointer at the buzzer sent the game into the extra frame — a stretch that was dominated by the visitors, who went on to outscore their downtrodden hosts, 9-3, to claim the six-point victory.
Forward Nick Quicksell led Woodbury with 18 points, with frontcourt mate Joe Rizzardi claiming 17 points himself. Woodbury fell to 3-8 overall in the loss and remained second-to-last in the league standings with a 1-4 mark.
