David Munro and Loc Pham, both of Woodbury, were honored along with other Senior Companions and Foster Grandparents in the east metro area Dec. 16 at a special anniversary celebration of the Senior Companion Program, part of the National Corporation for National and Community Service sponsored in Minnesota by Lutheran Social Service.
Senior Companions, age 55 or older, help frail seniors remain at home and independent by offering companionship, grocery shopping assistance and transportation to medical appointments. Foster grandparents, also 55 or older, provide special tutoring and one-to-one mentoring to children in schools, Head Start programs and shelters. More than 300 volunteers serve in Anoka, Carver, Dakota, Hennepin, Ramsey and Washington counties.
For more information on senior volunteer opportunities in the area, contact Mary Kay Connolly at the non-profit Lutheran Social Service at (651) 310-9440. General information is available at www.lssmn.org.
