Royal Raptors defeated at home
One-goal loss to Brainerd/Little Falls follows a 1-1-1 appearance at Andover Tournament.By: Tom Carothers, Woodbury Bulletin
The South Washington County girls hockey team dropped below the .500 mark as it prepared to re-enter Suburban East Conference play this week as the Royal Raptors were topped, 3-2, by Brainerd/Little Falls in its first game of 2010 on Saturday.
The loss kicked off a three-game homestand for the Woodbury/East Ridge conglomerate as the visitors from the great white north recorded two second-period goals to take a 2-0 lead before a pair of third-period tallies from sisters Sydney and Kayla Falconer leveled the count at 2-2 before Brainerd/Little Falls squeaked home the victorious goal on the power play with just over one minute remaining in regulation.
Royal Raptors goaltender Katie Ahmann made 17 saves in the loss.
The home defeat followed a "Even Steven" appearance in the Andover Tournament to conclude 2009 as the Raptors were credited with a 1-1-1 record over their three games in the northeast metro from Dec. 28-31.
South Washington County fell, 1-0, to Anoka, tied 12th-ranked North Wright County 1-1, and topped Holy Angels, 4-0, in tourney play.
The Royal Raptors take on Cretin-Derham Hall on Tuesday, Jan. 5 at the Bielenberg Sports Center, then host eighth-ranked White Bear Lake on Friday, Jan. 8.
