After a career spent literally laying the groundwork for numerous recognizable structures in and around the Twin Cities, the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 49 officially recognized Jacob Ebertz of Woodbury for 45 years of service at a recent ceremony for retirees.
Ebertz started with Local 49 in 1961 as an oiler, but spent most of his career working on bulldozers.
He helped construct many landmarks, including Phalen Golf Course in St Paul, Interstate 694, Highway 610 and Twin Cities International Airport runway expansions.
Looking back, Ebertz calls his work a labor of love, finding his reward in creating something useful for the community to enjoy.
“With the construction of everything from major interstates to office buildings, Ebertz’s generation of Operators literally built the modern infrastructure we take for granted today,” said Glen Johnson, Local 49’s business manager. “We owe them great thanks for this lifetime of work.”
