Nearly half of Woodbury’s police force will attend the funeral service today for slain North St. Paul cop Richard Crittenden.
Crittenden was responding to a domestic call Monday morning when he was fatally shot with his own gun during a physical struggle with a man in an apartment. A Maplewood officer assisting on the call then fatally shot the suspect. That officer suffered a gunshot wound to the arm during an exchange of gunfire with the suspect.
Close to 30 off-duty Woodbury police officers will attend the 11 a.m. service for Crittenden at Aldrich Arena in Maplewood. Police Capt. Steve Wills said that is just what fellow cops do.
“It’s the law enforcement family and you go,” Wills said. “There’s just no second thoughts about it.”
On-duty Woodbury Public Safety officials will provide fire coverage for Oakdale and the south end of Maplewood during the funeral, and two Woodbury paramedics will be on scene at the funeral if medical assistance is needed.
Wills said there will be normal patrol coverage of Woodbury today.
