Royals, Raptors begin seasons at SEC Relays

Girls swimming and diving teams take part in traditional opener at Stillwater Junior High and Cottage Grove Middle School.

Girls from the Woodbury and East Ridge swimming and diving teams began their seasons on Thursday evening at the annual Suburban East Conference Relays, with swimmers competing at Stillwater Junior High, the divers leaping at Cottage Grove Middle School.

Woodbury took second overall to Stillwater with 134 points to the Ponies' 160, while the Raptors took sixth with 60 points.

It was the first-ever meet for the Raptors girls, and the squad earned its highest event placing in the 1-meter diving competition as the trio of junior Bailee Meyer, freshman Jenna Karrow and freshman Corinna Mickus tallied a 171.80.

Winning the diving contest was Woodbury, with their threesome of junior Erin Kohlbeck, sophomore Emily Bonfig and new freshman diver Lauren (Red) Puglisi took first a new meet record score of 198.90.

In the pool, Royals swimmers took one first (400-yard medley relay) and two second-place results (200-yard breaststroke relay, 400-yard freestyle relay).

The quartet of Britta Sortland, Gabrielle Gazzola, Lizzy Groess and Natalie Lugg took the 400 medley win in a time of 4 minutes, 17.75 seconds.

East Ridge's top finish was a third-place spot in the 800-yard freestyle relay. Names of the ERHS 800 team were not available.
