Woodbury Legion ballclub triumphs in “play-in” contest versus Red Wing.By: Tom Carothers, Woodbury Bulletin
The second season opened in good form for the Woodbury Legion Blue baseball team as the squad shutout Red Wing, 11-0, on Sunday, July 19 in the district playoff “play-in” game.
Workhorse Rich Klein pitched all seven innings, striking out nine visiting batters in the shutout victory as Cole Volkers went 4-for-5 at the plate with three runs batted in and two scored.
“He’s our super soph,” coach Justin Feldkamp said of Volkers, who enters his junior year at Woodbury high School in just over a month.
Brendan O’Connor was 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored, with Andrew Herbert scoring twice and driving in two runs. Mike Harman went 2-for-2 with two runs scored, while Mike Rommes went 2-or-5 with a run scored and one RBI.
With the triumph, 13th seeded Woodbury (15-10 on the year) advanced to play Oakdale — an 11-0 victor over Blue two weeks ago — in the District 3 Tournament on Wednesday, July 22 at the Alimagnet Fields complex in Burnsville.
“We just need to find a way to be more consistent with our bats and we will have a chance against anyone,” Feldkamp said.
Blue is playing some of its best ball of the season, as the team capped off its regular season with a succession of resounding victories that included a 13-1 drubbing of South Saint Paul on Tuesday, July 14 and a 7-0 shutout of Inver Grove Heights two evenings later.
Volkers has been on a tear at the plate, whacking a grand slam home run deep over the leftfield wall in the Tuesday win and going 2-for-3 with a triple, two RBI and one scored in the Thursday game.
Harman pitched six innings to down Inver Grove Heights with a six-strikeout, four-hit performance, while Klein struckout five in the five-inning Tuesday Packer pasting.
