A local beauty and the beast, Princess Kay of the Milky Way, and Viktor Viking, the Minnesota Vikings mascot, teamed up at Red Rock Elementary on Thursday, July 16 to spread the word of good nutrition and exercise to Community Education’s Kids Club program.

During the event, which was a joint effort between the Minnesota Vikings and the Minnesota Dairy Council, students received many lessons about how to stay healthy.

“The Vikings were looking to reach out to youth in a positive way, and the Dairy Council seemed like a natural partnership because of their nutrition message,” Brett Taber, marketing coordinator for the Vikings,” said. “We need to get kids off the couch and off the video games and outside exercising and playing sports.”

During the program, Viktor was a at a loss for words over how important good nutrition and exercise is while the Vikings’ cheerleaders, KFAN radio personality Paul Allen, and Minnesota Vikings linebacker Chad Greenway.

Lisa McCann, program director for the Minnesota Dairy Council, said they wanted to get involved with this program because teaching proper nutrition the importance of exercise and staying healthy is a message they are continually trying to instill in the minds of children.

“In this day in age when childhood obesity is so great, this is a time when kids need to be active and eat healthy,” she said. “These lessons are solid basis for the rest of their lives.”

After the presentation from the Minnesota Vikings, Princess Kay herself, Kristy Mussman, spoke to the kids about being raised on a dairy farm and how important dairy, and the rest of the food groups, are to a growing body and everyday life.

At the end of the assembly, kids walked away with booklets of fun facts and tips to staying healthy and happy.
