On May 5 the Minnesota Department of Education announced student winners of scholar titles in the academically rigorous recognition program, the 2009 Minnesota Scholars of Distinction awards.

Prithwis K. Mukhopadhyay of Woodbury, a sophomore at Woodbury High School, earned recognition as both a Mathematics and a Science scholar of distinction. This is the second consecutive year he has earned both honors.

Scholar title winners were recognized at a ceremony on Saturday, May 16, on the Hamline University campus, St. Paul and received awards from Minnesota’s commissioner of education, Alice Seagren.

Mukhopadhyay was unable to attend the ceremony. He was at the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Reno, Nev. presenting his science fair award-winning research corroborating the work of scientists on the cancerous effects of the food additive carrageenan.

ISEF is the world’s largest international pre-college science competition and is judged by doctoral level scientists.
