School District 833 reminds families that in February the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) updated vaccine requirements for the 2009-10 school year for all children entering kindergarten and seventh grade.

Students will be required to have received two doses of the chickenpox immunization (varicella).

If the student has already had chickenpox, the immunizations are not necessary; and if the student has never been vaccinated for varicella, two immunizations must be given three months apart.

To attend school in Minnesota, students must show they’ve been immunized or file a medical or notarized exemption with the school.

More details are available on the district’s website www.sowashco.k12.mn.us/comed/ healthservices/ and the MDH website http://www.health.state.mn.us/divs/idepc/immunize/laws/chknpxlaw.html/.
