For the sixth year, several characteristics of a school organization that exhibit fiscal health and sound fiscal management and accountability were applied as a basis for issuing a school finance award.

Staff at the Minnesota Department of Education reviewed local publications, audit reports and thousands of pieces of fiscal data on reporting units to determine the award winners.

This year, awards went to 63 K-12 school districts and District 833 is receiving the award for the third year in a row.

Superintendent Tom Nelson credits the district’s sound financial stability to “an excellent finance department, a responsible school board and present and past administration that work to ensure responsible financial practices.”

MDE evaluation of reporting units includes ensuring that all accounts are zero or positive fund balance, have written policies on positive fund balances and deficit spending, and that personnel participate in finance and accounting workshops.

Information about the district’s finances is available on the web site at www.sowashco.k12.mn.us/finance/default.asp
