Afton recognizes resident, soldier deploying to Iraq

The Afton City Council took some time at a special meeting Feb. 5 to recognize those traveling to Iraq next month, particularly John Morris, who is an Afton resident.

The council passed a resolution that Washington County commissioner Gary Kriesel, has been circulating. The resolution recognizes the National Guard group the 34th Red Bull Infantry Division.

The resolution states that Afton “acknowledges with grateful appreciation, respect, and admiration, the sacrifices of the military personnel who are leaving home and loves ones.”

The Red Bull infantry is undertaking an unprecedented military mission by leading a force of more than 16,000 to enable the Iraqi people to take responsibility for their own future affairs.

The county board has also adopted a similar resolution.

The main purpose of the resolution is to “tell the soldiers that their service to our country is appreciated and that we are aware of their sacrifice in leaving family, friends, and Minnesota for their deployment,” according to a letter from Gary Kriesel.
