Lawrence Simmons, a Bible instructor at New Life Academy, was selected for the newly created position of campus pastor at the school.
Simmons teaches three Bible classes, works with academy students as a mentor and advisor and also prepares the 20-plus students who play/sing at intervals for the chapel band, readying videos to accompany chapel themes and topics, organizing dramas, and lining up speakers each week.
He also heads New Life Academy’s “Project Serve,” a 2008 - 09 community service program for students. Each academy student is required to assist a nonprofit ministry for a certain number of hours each semester.
“We want our students to learn to serve others,” Simmons said.
In the most recent project, Invisible Children, students collect books which will then be sold. The proceeds of the book sales will directly fund construction of a high school in the African nation of Uganda (Gulu).
In addition, Simmons coaches girls’ varsity soccer in the fall, seventh grade girls’ basketball in the winter, and track and field in the spring.
