The judges have spoken and this year’s Lake Idol winner... will be announced after the winter break.
After three weeks of competitions, ninth graders, Morgan Gerke and Alyssa Wynn came out on top in the second annual Lake Idol competition, inspired by Fox’s American Idol, at Lake Junior High with their performance of Settlin’ by Sugarland.
The Lake Idol competition, sponsored by the Lake Student Literacy Council, saw sixth- through ninth-grade students at Lake Junior High compete in front of their peers for a shot at the $100 grand prize to a store of their choice. Gerke and Wynn chose the Buckle.
Gerke and Wynn decided to team up for the competition because they spent a lot of time over the summer singing and had a lot of fun with it.
“We have a passion for singing,” Gerke said.
During the competition, the three judges, science teacher Logan Carstenson, welcome desk worker Satonia Moore-Ellis, and music teacher Gilian Teoh, had nothing but praise for the girls; everything from “the best so far” to “beautiful singing,” and even “I don’t think Lake Idol is the right show for you, I think you’d be a better fit for Nashville Star.”
The girls both said they were really excited about wining, but the entire competition was nerve-racking because of having to get up and sing in front of everyone and some of their competition was a little intimidating.
“We’d still be shaking when we got off the stage,” Wynn said.
Both girls said they will continue to sing, Wynn as a “hobby,” and Gerke as a “dream.”
All proceeds from this year’s ticket sales will help purchase classroom libraries throughout the school and fund operating costs of the literacy council.
