Memorial Lutheran Church of Afton will mark the beginning of the Advent season with an Advent Service of Vespers and holiday buffet, Sunday, Dec. 9 at 5:30 p.m. The public is invited and no reservations are needed. A freewill offering will be gladly accepted for the buffet.
The event is an informal service of hymns, readings and anthems. Performed by the church’s choirs, soloists and instrumentalists, the music spans several centuries and continents, and features Mendelssohn’s “There Shall A Star Come Out of Jacob.” It includes congregational singing of favorite seasonal hymns.
With a nod to the congregation’s ethnic origin, the evening concludes with the legend of Santa Lucia and fellowship around a traditional Scandinavian holiday buffet.
The church is located at 15730 S. Afton Boulevard, two blocks west of the St. Croix River on Highway 18. For information about the church, visit www.memoriallutheran.org or call (651) 436-1138.
