Lake Junior High School student Prithwis Mukhopadhyay was awarded the title of Minnesota Scholar of Distinction in two subject areas by the Minnesota Department of Education. He was one of only two students named a scholar of distinction in mathematics and also earned the title for science.

Twenty-seven students were honored for their achievement in the Minnesota Scholars of Distinction program which encourages high school students to perform at highly rigorous levels in five specific academic areas and rewards their depth of knowledge and skill in application.

“I am pleased to recognize these students as Scholars of Distinction for the academic excellence and real-world application of their projects,” said education commissioner Alice Seagren. “I commend these students for their hard work and outstanding achievement.”

The Scholars of Distinction program was developed by the Minnesota Department of Education through a partnership with professionals and educators with expertise in each specialty area. The program recognizes high school students who have demonstrated expert or highly accomplished levels of performance in theater arts, mathematics, science, applied geography or leadership.

To earn this recognition, high school students must complete required work in Minnesota’s academic standards, demonstrate mastery of complex subject matter and apply their knowledge and skills on challenging projects.
