The “Croix Chorus,” a St. Croix Valley barbershop chorus, have made arrangements to feature the renowned “Metropolis” quartet as part of the group’s 2008 show on April 19.

There will be two performances, at 3 and 7 p.m. at the Stillwater Area High School Performing Arts Center.

The school is fully handicapped accessible.

“We are have lined up two outstanding barbershop quartets to be featured on this show,” said show chairman Dick Law of Hudson, Wis.

The theme of the show this year is “70 Years of the Barbershop Harmony Society.”

The group researched archives to find out how the Society was organized in 1938.

In the process, they put together a package of a number of kinds of music — including some “chestnuts” that almost everybody remembers as well as some popular arrangements of well -known music.

Metropolis has performed in many areas of the United States and Canada and in seven foreign countries.

They will be flying in from Central California just for the ST. Croix Valleys Shows.

The Stillwater City Council initiated a proclamation at its early April meeting to designate April as “Barbershop Harmony Month in Stillwater.”

“The actual 70th birthday of the organization is April 11. That’s when a bunch of guys who liked to sing got together in Tulsa, Okla. and formed the society,” said chorus manager Tyler Smith. “It was originally called the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America."

A few years ago, the name was shortened to the Barbershop Harmony Society.
