Dr. Amy Stromwall of Summit Orthopedics received a “Breaking Barriers” award this month for her positive impact and contributions in providing athletic opportunities for girls and women throughout the Twin Cities area.

Stromwall, an orthopedic physician who specializes in sports medicine and treating female athletes, received the award at the Minnesota Girls and Women in Sports Day annual celebration at the State Capitol Rotunda in St. Paul.

Minnesota Girls and Women in Sports Day honors the achievements and participation of girls and women in sports.

“This award reflects the exemplary work that Stromwall performs at Summit Orthopedics,” said Dr. Jack Drogt, president of Summit Orthopedics.

A native of St. Paul, Stromwall holds clinics in downtown St. Paul, Eagan and Maplewood. Stromwall sees patients of all ages and competitive levels who have suffered sports- or fitness-related injuries, and she takes special interest in evaluating and diagnosing injuries to female athletes.

“As a former competitive athlete, I believe I have a greater understanding of these injuries and can relate well to the athlete,” said Stromwall.

Stromwall swam competitively in high school and at Hamline University in St. Paul. Recently, she was selected to oversee the health of U.S. Olympic swimmers at a July training camp. Stromwall has also competed in triathlons.

Stromwall received her medical degree from the University of Minnesota and completed advanced fellowship training in sports medicine from San Jose Medical Center in San Jose, Calif.
