East Ridge volleyball: Raptors take down conference foe Park in busy week

The East Ridge volleyball team won four of its six matches in a busy stretch last week to improve to 9-10 on the year overall and 3-2 in the Suburban East Conference.

The East Ridge volleyball team won four of its six matches in a busy stretch last week to improve to 9-10 on the year overall and 3-2 in the Suburban East Conference.

East Ridge began the week with a 3-0 SEC win over Park on Tuesday, Sept. 27, before falling 3-1 to sixth-ranked Eagan on Thursday, Sept. 29, and going 3-1 at the Cretin-Derham Hall Tournament on Saturday, Oct. 1, in St. Paul.

Junior outside hitter Margaret Eggert led the way for the Raptors in the 25-16, 25-7, 25-12 win over Park (2-15; 0-5 SEC) with 15 kills, four digs and one block, while going 21-for-21 with three aces at the service line. Also, junior Tess Kelzenberg had a team-high 27 set assists and was 12-for-12 serving to go along with two kills. Additionally, senior Brandi Knupp had seven digs, seven kills, a block and was 11-for-11 with two aces serving, senior Maggie Remke was 13-for-14 serving with two aces, five digs, five kills and a block and freshman Emily Hrastich was 8-for-8 serving with two digs, one kill and one block.

“We played well as a team,” East Ridge head coach Lindsay Ashburn said. “All the girls played and contributed to the win.”

After beating Park, East Ridge took a game off of sixth-ranked Eagan, but fell 25-19, 25-18, 20-25, 25-18 to the Wildcats.

Eggert came up big in the loss, with a team-best 23 kills to go along with 15 digs and two blocks, while going 11-for-11 serving. Kelzenberg again had a team-high in assists with 35 to go along with 13 digs and two aces and Knupp had a team-high 23 digs, along with nine kills and two assists. Also, Remke had nine kills, seven digs and two aces in the loss.

At the Cretin-Derham Hall Tournament, East Ridge beat South St. Paul 2-1, Hudson, (Wis.) 2-0, and St. Peter 2-1 and lost to No. 4 Lakeville South 2-0 on Saturday in St. Paul.

East Ridge took on Minneapolis Southwest and Hastings on Monday and Tuesday, after the Bulletin went to print. Next, the Raptors welcome Roseville to East Ridge High School on Thursday, Oct. 6, before going to rival Woodbury on Tuesday, Oct. 11.
