East Ridge girls tennis: Raptors repeat as Royal/Raptor Quad tournament champions

The East Ridge girls tennis team topped intra-district foe Woodbury 5-2 in the final of the Royal/Raptor Quad tournament on Wednesday, Aug. 24, to repeat as tournament champions after beating Tartan and Harding earlier in the day.

The East Ridge girls tennis team topped intra-district foe Woodbury 5-2 in the final of the Royal/Raptor Quad tournament on Wednesday, Aug. 24, to repeat as tournament champions after beating Tartan and Harding earlier in the day.

In the championship game, East Ridge won all four singles and one doubles match to claim the victory over the Royals. At first singles, East Ridge junior Leah Robinson defeated Woodbury senior Hannah Robbins 6-1, 6-4, while East Ridge junior Maddie Blake won 6-4, 6-3 at second singles over Woodbury junior Kaitlyn Shea. At third and fourth singles, respectively, twin sisters and eighth graders Nicole and Natalie Robinson earned wins. Nicole Robinson won 6-1, 6-2 over senior CoCo Vizoli and Natalie Robinson won 6-0, 6-1 over senior Rae Zellwer.

In doubles play, the No. 1 Woodbury duo of senior Rachel Eisenreich and sophomore Shanna Stevenson defeated East Ridge’s Emily Mueller and Anna Bearrood 6-7 (5-7) and 6-7 (2-7), while Woodbury senior Kristin Chu and junior Alyssa Delmundo defeated East Ridge’s Hannah Jacobs and Tiffany Jahn 3-6, 6-4 (13-15) at third doubles. The Raptors earned its lone doubles point as Taylor Anderson and Oksana Carlier defeated the Royals’ Katie Kreibich and Taylor Monkman 6-1, 6-4 at second doubles.

Prior to topping Woodbury, East Ridge defeated Harding 5-2 as the Raptors swept doubles play, Nicole Robinson won 6-1, 6-2 at third singles and Natalie Robinson won 6-3, 6-3 at fourth singles. In doubles action, Mueller and Bearrood won 6-1, 6-0 at first doubles, Anderson and Carlier won 6-1, 6-3 at second doubles and Jacobs and Jahn won 6-1, 6-3 at third doubles. In the tournament, East Ridge blanked Tartan 7-0. Leah Robinson won 6-1, 6-4 at No. 1 singles, Blake won 6-3, 6-3 at second singles, and Natalie and Nicole Robinson each won 6-0, 6-0 at third and fourth singles, respectively. In doubles play, Mueller and Bearrood won 6-2, 6-1 at first dubs, Anderson and Carlier won 6-1, 6-4 at second doubles and Jacobs and Jahn were victorious, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 3 doubles.

Prior to the tournament, East Ridge (4-0) opened the season with a 7-0 non-conference win over fellow District 833 school New Life Academy on Monday, Aug. 22, at East Ridge High School. At No. 1 singles, Leah Robinson topped NLA senior Maddie Gesell 6-0, 6-2, Blake beat Eagles senior Shelby Derrick 6-1, 6-2 at second singles, Natalie Robinson won 6-2, 6-0 over senior Joelle Kamp at third singles and Nicole Robinson won 6-1, 6-2 over Anu Otgonbat, a sophomore, at fourth singles. In doubles action, Mueller and Bearrood topped New Life’s Kylie Falteisek and Laurel Baar 6-1, 6-0 at first doubles, East Ridge’s Hannah Strom and Anderson beat Emma Gorter and Katie Zinke 6-1, 6-0 at second doubles and Audri Sturm and Oksana Carlier beat NLA’s Isabelle Vogel and Lauren Stillwell 6-0, 6-0 at third dubs.

East Ridge took on St. Paul Central and St. Paul Highland Park, while NLA played St. Paul Como Park on Tuesday, Aug. 30, after the Bulletin went to press. Next, East Ridge plays intra-district rival Park to open conference play and NLA takes on Hill-Murray on Thursday, Sept. 1.
