School District tax levy shows 5.2 percent increase

The School District 833 school board, Dec. 18, approved the final tax levy for this year for taxes to be paid next year.

The $53.5 million levy, including voter-approved referendums, is up 5.2 percent over last year.

Even though property evaluations in some parts of the county are down, the tax value of residential and commercial property in the district is up slightly less than 2 percent.

“Most residents will not see that 5 percent,” said Aaron Bushberger, district finance director.

Assuming the taxable value of a home remained the same between 2008 and 2009, the district’s portion of taxes next year is estimated to increase slightly, according to Bushberger.

A home valued this year at $250,000, for example, would see an increase of approximately $29 or 2.48 percent.

Homes with a decline in market value would see a smaller increase, or a decrease, and homes with a market increase would see a larger increase, Bushberger said.

The increase on a $150,00 home is $17, a $200,000 home a $24 increase and $350,000 home a $41 increase.
