Board says scrap Labor Day rule

This year’s school calendar is an example of why the law banning school starts until after Labor Day should be changed, District 833 administrators and school board members told local legislators in a meeting, Dec. 4.

This year, in order to get the school year completed in the first week of June, winter break does not begin until Dec. 24. Also, Park High School will have school on the Friday, June 5. Traditionally, Park has held graduation on Friday night. Graduation has been moved to Saturday night, June 6.

District administrators and school board members asked local legislators, in a meeting, Dec. 4, to rescind the law and allow each district to decide.

Many parents will be pulling students out of school during the week before Christmas, said board member Leslee Boyd, because of holiday travel.

“You’ve got my vote,” said Rep. Denny McNamara, R-Hastings.
