A slightly nontraditional 24-7 fitness center opened in Woodbury.

Woodwinds Health Campus just added the center to its Ways to Wellness program, which has been in place for six years helping people get on the right track when it comes to health and wellness.

The addition of the expanded fitness center is another element of Ways to Wellness, said Brenda Navin, director of community health and wellness.

"Most of our clients here are doing some type of management... This is a way for them to help execute on their Ways to Wellness plans," she said.

The fitness center officers "partnerships" as opposed to memberships because they offer quarterly check-ins.

Coaches at the center check-in with clients to do weight assessments, set goals, check vitals and give feedback on how they're doing, Navin said.

Although many of the Ways to Wellness members are recovery patients from the hospital, the fitness center is open to all community members.

Navin said the gym will offer group classes, a "comfortable environment" and a place for people to follow their wellness plans.

"You don't need a fancy workout outfit when you're here," she said.

The 8,000 square foot space in the Oak Center building at Woodwinds Health Campus now has a number of cardio machines, weight equipment and Pilates and yoga rooms.

Ways to Wellness first began with a focus on weight management and nutrition. Then the center began adding personal training and health and wellness coaching from health care professionals.

"That has been an integral part in advancing," Navin said.

She added that having the health care professionals and the one-on-one sessions play an important role in following a fitness plan. In addition to quarterly check-ins, the coaches often work with members in between to see how they're doing.

"A lot of people start something and then they stop," Navin said. "This really helps solidify, for people, what they're trying to achieve and how they can achieve it."

The fitness center was expanded to become a 24-7 facility because current Ways to Wellness clients asked for a place to work out on their own as well, in addition to maintaining relationships with the coaches.

"For many people going to like a big box gym really wasn't their cup of tea," Navin said. "They wanted something smaller, more intimate."

The center has been open since April. Ways to Wellness held an informational session about the gym Thursday, June 14, announcing its official opening.
