The Woodbury wrestling team picked up two victories Friday in its season-opening quadrangular at Eastview High School.

The Royals beat St. Paul Central 72-6 and beat Lakeville South 39-37, but lost to Eastview 42-42, after losing on the eighth criteria, which gives the victory to the team which scored first in the most matches.

Howard Jones upset 10th-ranked Gary Knick in the St. Paul Central match with a 16-5 major decision victory while Ben Donnelly, ranked third in Class 3A at 138 pounds, beat Lakeville South's Shamar Williams, who is ranked third at 132 pounds, 5-3.

Justin Herold-Plakut also had a big victory at 160 pounds with a third-period pin of state participant Jacob Rukavina in the match.

Each one of Woodbury's losses in the dual came via pin, something the team will have to avoid, head coach Justin Smith said.

The Royals went on to place 10th overall Saturday out of 16 teams at the Lakeville North Paul Wolf Panther Invite.

Donnelly and Herold-Plakut each finished second at their weight classes, losing to a Scott West opponent in the finals. Donnelly lost 4-2 to Scott West's Luke Zilverberg, who is ranked third at 145 pounds in Class 2A and Herold-Plakut lost 6-2 to Scott West's Andrew Fogarty, who is ranked second at 152 pounds in Class 2A.

Donnelly, a sophomore, also reached the 100 career victory mark Saturday at the tournament.

Smith said eighth-grader Austin Braun emerged at the tournament to establish himself as the team's 113-pounder after a third-place finish. Braun had three falls in Friday's quad and followed that up with a strong performance Saturday. Braun lost in overtime in the semifinals and beat New Richmond's Dylan Dowd 8-4 to claim third.

Ty Johnson finished fourth at 120 pounds for the Royals after a 2-1 loss to Lakeville North's Collin Degrammont.

Jones finished fourth at 170 pounds and Matt Delaney took sixth at 138 pounds.

Hudson won the tournament with 183 points while Scott West placed second and Lakeville North finished third with 117 points.

Woodbury heads to Maple Grove Saturday for tournament Saturday.
