Woodbury wrestling: Herold-Plakut wins opener, Johnson and Donnelly fall
Woodbury sophomore Justin Herold-Plakut won his first-round match at the 2011-12 State Wrestling Tournament at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. However, teammates Ty Johnson and Ben Donnelly weren't as fortunate.
In his third state tournament, Herold-Plakut, who is unranked in the 132-pound weight class in Class AAA, beat Little Falls junior Connor Scherping 4-1 in the opening round to advance to the state quarterfinals. Scherping (32-11) is also unranked. The win improved Herold-Plakut's record to 32-8 on the year. He'll now face Wayzata's Collin Sohn (23-13), who upset eighth-ranked Lakeville North sophomore Colton Pasvogel 6-2 in overtime in the first round.
Donnelly, who earned fifth-place in last year's state meet, was defeated 5-3 by Rochester Mayo junior Jake Hanson in his first-round match. Donnelly (33-9) beat Hanson for fifth place last year. However, this year, Hanson, who is ranked sixth in Class AAA at 138 pounds, earned revenge over the 10th-ranked Donnelly. In the match, with the score tied 2-2 with 1:03 remaining in the third period, Donnelly forfeited a point in order to try and score a 2-point takedown and a 1-point lead. However, down 3-2, Donnelly was taken down by Hanson (36-4) and fell behind 5-2. With six seconds left, Donnelly earned a point on an escape, but couldn't get a last-second takedown to tie.
Donnelly now needs Hanson to upset No. 1-ranked Apple Valley freshman Dayton Racer in the quarterfinals in order to get another match, in the consolation round. If Racer (36-4) beats Hanson, Donnelly's season is over.
In his first state tournament match, Johnson, an unranked freshman 106-pound wrestler, lost 5-3 to Trevor Westerlund, an Albert Lea junior, who is ranked No. 1 in the weight class in Class AAA. Johnson (29-11) will get another match in Friday's consolation round or "wrestlebacks" if Westerlund (35-3) can beat unranked St. Michael-Albertville sophomore Aaron Dick (35-8) in the quarterfinals.
Tonight's Class AAA quarterfinals begin at 5 p.m. with all wrestlebacks beginning at 8 p.m.
Class AAA consolation quarterfinals start at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 3, with Class AAA championship semifinals beginning roughly at 11:15 a.m. on Saturday. Third place and fifth place matches start at 5 p.m. on Saturday, with championship matches beginning at approximately 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
