Woodbury wrestling: Donnelly, Herold-Plakut win first-round matches at state tournament
Woodbury’s Ben Donnelly and Justin Herold-Plakut advanced at the 2013-14 State Wrestling Tournament, however, the rest of the Royals will need a little help after losing in the first round of the Class AAA bracket on Friday, Feb. 28.
Donnelly, a junior ranked sixth at 145 pounds, defeated unranked Anoka junior Preston Flaherty (13-10) with a 9-3 decision in the opening round. Donnelly (37-4) will now face fourth-ranked Apple Valley sophomore Brock Morgan (41-4) in round two.
Herold-Plakut, a senior ranked No. 1 in Class AAA at 152 pounds, won 6-2 over unranked Cambridge-Isanti junior David Kent (33-10). Herold-Plakut (39-3) will take on No. 4-ranked Shakopee sophomore Owen Webster (29-5) in the second round.
Woodbury sent a school-record seven individual wrestlers to the state tournament this year.
In the 113-pound bracket unranked Woodbury freshman Austin Braun (29-10) lost 6-1 to fourth-ranked Centennial freshman Jake Bergeland (39-3) with a 6-1 decision in the first round. At 126 pounds, fifth-ranked junior Ty Johnson (29-10) lost a 6-0 decision to unranked Rochester John Marshall sophomore Logan Saltou (29-5). At 132 pounds, unranked senior Matt Delaney (34-8) lost 10-4 to No. 4-ranked Wayzata senior Nick O’Brien (36-3). In the 160-pound bracket unranked senior Howard Jones (24-11) lost 9-6 to unranked Centennial senior Tom Handley (35-7). And, at 195 pounds, senior John McNiff (21-14) was pinned by unranked Park Center senior Julius Ogunti (24-4).
Braun, Johnson, Delaney, Jones and McNiff now need their first-round opponents to win their second-round matches later tonight in order to stay alive. The Class AAA second round begins at 6:30 p.m.
