Woodbury city officials say they will no longer ask the state to partially fund a new police and fire training facility. Not yet anyway.

The city had discussed submitting a request to get in line for the next state bonding bill to help fund the $10 million project that would potentially be a partnership between several agencies including the city of Cottage Grove.

But Public Safety Director Lee Vague said Woodbury, though in need of additional space to accommodate its growing force, doesn’t necessarily have to commit this year.

“Ultimately we’re not in a crisis,” he said. “We’re not feeling pressure that we have to act and do something now.”

Woodbury City Council in July looked at signing a resolution with Cottage Grove to request the funds in the next bonding cycle, but put the brakes on it when it discovered that plans are only conceptual at this point.

City officials were also set to review additional details earlier this month, but canceled the Oct. 9 discussion when staff discovered there were more questions than answers available.

The city doesn’t have firm design plans, a location or who exactly all the partners are, Vague said. There were talks of also partnering with Inver Hills Community College, but nothing was set in stone.

“We’re not disengaging in the process, but we’re also not going to feel pressured,” he said.

Vague said jumping into the proposal to meet deadlines without carefully planning out all the logistics is not the best approach.

“We’re not going to react out as we’re in a crisis right now,” he said. “It’s not how we do business, we need to be planful.”
