Woodbury Walgreens open after noxious fumes force temporary closure

Email

A Woodbury store is open again after noxious fumes there forced it to close temporarily earlier this week.

Walgreens, 1965 Donegal Drive, was closed for a couple hours on Monday after workers began feeling ill, said manager Kim Huynh. The problem stemmed from issues attempting to fix a clogged mop sink.

According to a Woodbury police report, workers there attempted to unclog the sink by using Drano. Shortly after, employees and customers noticed a foul odor spreading throughout the store.

Workers became ill, with reports of upset stomachs, headaches and weakness, according to the report.

Woodbury firefighters arrived on scene and detected elevated levels of methane gas, but were unable to check for additional gasses. Authorities advised Walgreens workers to consider closing the store for the safety of employees and customers.

Huynh said it was determined that a worker had poured in the Drano unaware that the clogged sink's pipes also contained bleach creating a "fume that irritated workers."

"The problem is solved," she said.

Huynh said a new mop sink is in the process of being installed and approved by Walgreens' corporate officials.
