Woodbury volleyball: Royals slip to 0-4 after winless Mound-Westonka tourney
Well, things haven't gotten any easier for the Woodbury volleyball team.
After starting the season out with a loss to Duluth East, the Royals headed to Mound for the Mound-Westonka tournament. The Royals played three games and lost all three, falling to Rogers 2-1 (3-4), St. Anthony Village (7-2) 2-0 and Spring Lake Park (3-3) 2-1.
"Confidence, cohesiveness and finishing strong are the three areas the team needs to improve the most," said head coach Linda Crum.
While stats weren't made available after the tournament, Crum acknowledged that Sara Biermaier, Aby Andualem-Emiru, Monica Johnson, Ellyn Barker, Kelsie Nowicki , Laura Born and Kelsey Schultze have all played well so far this season.
Not many teams can say they have eight players playing well for them - especially when that team has an 0-4 season to start the season, but the good news is a win shouldn't be too far away.
Woodbury next plays Park of Cottage Grove (0-0) on Thursday, a team that finished with just two wins last season. The Royals beat the Wolfpack twice last season and hope they can earn their first win against them this season.
Crum isn't looking at last year's results as any indication on how Thursday will go, though.
"While Park may not have the past record of Woodbury they have some excellent athletes and an excellent coach in R.T. Luzcek. At this point respecting every opponent is critical as is learning to finish and win," Crum said. "We have some very good players on our team that as seniors are now being challenged with the responsibility of court leadership. In time they will definitely meet that challenge and embrace it but it is all a learning process that can have its challenges along the way."
Right now for the Royals, getting the first win of the season is all that is on their minds, especially as the team starts Suburban East Conference play. Despite the 0-4 record to start the season, Woodbury has plenty of time to get back on the right track, and a win on Thursday would certainly help.
