Woodbury softball: Royals rough up Mounds View in doubleheader
The Woodbury softball team bounced back from three-straight Suburban East Conference losses with a pair of lopsided wins over SEC foe Mounds View in a double-header on Saturday, May 3, at Ojibway Park in Woodbury.
The Royals (7-3; 6-3 SEC) crushed the Mustangs a combined 23-3 in the two games, winning game one 10-2 and game two 13-1.
In the first game against Mounds View (3-6; 2-6 SEC), Woodbury freshman pitcher Ashley Mickschl struck out eight to go to improve to 4-1 in her first season as a varsity starter. At the plate, Woodbury senior Jordyn Yourczek went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and junior Madi Yochum went 2-for-3 with three RBIs. In game No. 2, senior pitcher Caitlin Balsimo held Mounds View to three hits as the Royals pounded out 16 hits in a five-inning win. The wins came on the heels of a 3-2 loss to Cretin-Derham Hall (4-9; 4-9 SEC) on Friday, May 2, in St. Paul. Balsimo was handed the tough-luck defeat in the circle, throwing a five-hitter and Tori Erickson belted her second home run of the year in the loss.
Woodbury will look to make a little hay while the sun shines this week. The Royals are set to play seven games in a five-day span, including a showdown with East Ridge on Thursday, May 8, at home.
