Woodbury softball: Five-game win streak ends for Royals
With a 3-2 extra-inning win over Stillwater, Woodbury began the year 5-0, but a pair of Suburban East Conference losses to Hastings and Forest Lake snapped the Royals’ win streak.
Woodbury beat Stillwater (4-5; 4-4 SEC) by a 3-2 score on Monday, April 21, on the road, then lost 9-0 to Hastings (5-3; 5-3 SEC) at home on Wednesday, April 23, before falling 6-2 at Forest Lake (4-0; 4-0 SEC) on Friday, April 28.
In the win over Stillwater, Woodbury freshman pitcher Ashley Mickschl went the distance to improve to 3-0 to start her varsity career. She also started the eighth inning with a double that was turned into the game-winning run when freshman catcher Shannon Motzo knocked in the winner. Woodbury junior Melissa Johnson and senior Jordyn Yourczeck had three hits apiece in the win.
On Wednesday, the Royals played in the cold and rain and managed only one hit – by Yourczeck - in a lopsided 9-0 loss to Hastings. The loss ended the Royals 5-0 undefeated start. Jordyn Yourczeck is leading the Royals with over .500 hitting .
In the loss to Forest Lake, the Rangers’ Rachael Harrington scattered seven hits, allowing just two earned runs for the win over Woodbury. Tied 2-2, Forest Lake scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth to pull away, then held on for the win.
Senior Tori Erickson was 3-for-3 with a run scored and two RBIs for the Royals in the loss.
Woodbury (5-2; 4-2 SEC) was scheduled to take on rivals East Ridge (4-5; 3-5 SEC) and Park (3-4; 3-4 SEC) on Monday and Tuesday, respectively, after the Bulletin went to print. Next, the Royals are set to face White Bear Lake (1-7; 1-7) at home on Wednesday, April 30.
