Woodbury girls tennis: Kreibich, Monkman earn third place in Section 4AA doubles tournament
Woodbury’s senior tandem of Katie Kreibich and Taylor Monkman finished the season on a high note, earning third place in the Section 4AA doubles tournament.
The Royals’ duo went 4-1 in this year’s playoffs. Kreibich and Monkman, the fifth seed in the 32-doubles pairing field, fell 6-0, 6-1 to the top-seeded Klass-Warch sisters from St. Paul Central in the section semifinals on Oct. 15 at the Baseline Tennis Center on the University of Minnesota campus in Minneapolis. A win would’ve put the Royals pairing to the finals later the same day and earn the duo an automatic berth in the Class AA state tournament.
Kreibich and Monkman, both captains of the Royals, bounced back from the loss to take down the No. 2 seed in the section, Hill-Murray’s Sarah Link and Haley Beath, 6-1, 6-3 to earn third place.The Klass-Warch sisters – Helen and Zoe – went on to win the section championship, defeating sixth-seeded Hanna Shands and Emily Cooper of Mahtomedi 6-0, 6-1 in the finals. Shands and Cooper upset Link and Beath 6-3, 6-4 in the semis.To earn a trip to the semifinals, Kreibich and Monkman kept the Royals’ season rolling with a win over fourth seeded Kelia Deming and Remi Larson of Stillwater, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5), in the quarterfinals on Oct. 10 at Baseline.Kreibich and Monkman won three matches on the opening day of the tournament. The dynamic duo first beat Emily LaCasse and Amy Glaus of North St. Paul, 6-0, 6-1, then dispatched of Roseville’s Claire Lutter and Mook Soawaphapsopha 6-1, 6-3 in the second round before topping Deming and Larson.In other matches, Woodbury’s double team of seniors Greta Eisenrich and Angela Drehmel fell 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the opener against Caitlyn Norman and Meishan Roen of St. Paul Central. In singles play, freshman Mackenzie Schurhamer fell 6-1, 6-2 to No. 1-seeded Olivia Paradise from Mahtomedi and senior Shanna Stevenson fell 6-1, 6-1 to Roseville’s Sydney Munson in the first round.
