The Royals' ride in the state Class AA girls soccer tournament ended abruptly Friday in a 1-0 loss to Burnsville.

"I'm sure they're going to be hurting tonight," Woodbury co-head coach Pat Ebertz said of his players after the game.

The Blaze's lone goal came at about 10 minutes into the second half by sophomore midfielder Abby Soderholm.

"They took advantage of their free kick and they scored," Ebertz said.

The Burnsville goal prompted an aggressive response from the Royals, including several shots on goal. Ebertz said the team changed up its formation in the final 15 minutes to create those scoring opportunities - none of which found the back of the net.

"We didn't finish," he said.

The loss draws the curtain on Woodbury's 2011-12 season. The Royals will graduate nine seniors, including standouts Lauren Nash, Madeline Trebesch, Maddie Nelson and Emily Erickson.

"I thought the seniors did a really good job this year," Ebertz said.
