The new year will begin much the same way the 2013 part of the season began for Woodbury – with Suburban East Conference foe Cretin Derham Hall.

Gaining momentum in the third period turned out be too little too for the Royals in their 4-1 loss to the Raiders when they opened the season back on Nov. 9. Now, the Royals have a chance to see how they’ve progressed when they face the second-place Raiders (9-5, 7-2 SEC).

A conference win has become a much-needed commodity for the Royals with a 1-8 record in their first nine conference games. Their most recent loss came at Forest Lake 4-2 on Dec. 21.

Livia Twohig and Kim Taplin both had goals in that game for the Royals (6-10; 1-8 SEC). Cassy Morris and Skye Shock assisted on the goals.

Both scores cut the Rangers’ lead to a goal, including 3-2 at 6:30 in the third period. But, the Rangers pulled away with another goal four minutes later.

Royals goalie Kaelan Geisser had 34 saves and an .895 save percentage in the loss. The Royals had been out-shot 38-22 and went 0-7 on the power play.

Non-conference play has been much more kind for the Royals with a 5-2 mark, including shut outs against their last two opponents. They only have SEC games on their remaining schedule.

One SEC team the Royals have beaten this year is Park and the two teams will face-off again on Tuesday, Jan. 7. However, the Wolfpack have improved since their first meeting, going 2-2-2 through Dec. 21 after a 0-7 start.
