Woodbury girls golf: Moore earns trip to big dance
Woodbury's Katie Moore earned a trip to the big dance last week.
Moore, a junior, qualified for the Minnesota State High School League Class AAA State Golf Tournament, shooting a two-day, 36-hole 161 at the Section 3AAA Championship Tournament, held between Phalen Golf Course in St. Paul and Bunker Hills Golf Course in Coon Rapids last week.
Out of section play, only one team advances to state, based on the two-day total, along with five individuals not on the top team.
Woodbury, the defending Section 3AAA champion, shot a 353 on the first day at Phalen to take fourth place in the 11-team section and moved on to day No. 2 as a team - 20 strokes behind the leader, Eastview (330). On the second day, the Royals totaled a 370 to take fifth place overall.
Individually, Moore led the way for Woodbury on both days, shooting a 77 on the first day - the top score overall on day No. 1 - and an 84 on the second day for a 161. Following Moore for the Royals was eighth grader Annemarie Fisher, who scored a 179, with a 91 on day No. 1 and an 88 on day No. 2, tying for 13th place overall. Woodbury senior Kari Johnson carded the Royals' third-best score with a 189, followed by senior Maggie Sweeney, who rounded out Woodbury's top four with a 202.
Eastview senior Sara Detlefson had the top score - 154 to win the individual section title.
The Class AAA State Tournament will start on Tuesday, June 12, at 7:30 a.m. at Bunker Hills.
Woodbury graduates four seniors from its 2012 roster - Johnson, Sweeney, Rachel Letsche and Nicole Wilke.
