Woodbury girls basketball: Royals win conference opener, improve to 4-1 overall

The Woodbury girls basketball team bounced back from its first loss of the year.

Woodbury, which lost to St. Paul Central on Friday, Dec. 13, beat Mounds View 45-40 on Monday, Dec. 16, at Woodbury High School, in the team’s first Suburban East Conference game of the season, then took care of Farmington 61-35 on the road on Thursday.

In the home-court win over Mounds View, Woodbury (4-1; 1-0 SEC) outscored the Mustangs 26-21 in the second half, to break a 19-19 tie at the half. Woodbury senior guard Kalley Hakes led the way offensively against Mounds View (3-2; 0-1 SEC) with a game-high 15 points. Also junior guard Kayla Bilski scored 11 points and junior guard Madi Yochum chipped in nine points.

Woodbury took on Hastings on Friday after the Bulletin went to print. Next, the Royals are set to compete in the St. Cloud Tech Invitational on Dec. 27 and 28 before returning to conference play against rival East Ridge on Jan. 3 at East Ridge.
