Woodbury head girls basketball coach Nathan McGuire is out of the job.

School District 833 did not renew McGuire’s coaching contract for next year. The non-renewal came at the season’s end and nearly two months after McGuire was placed on a leave of absence pending a district investigation of a complaint against him.

District 833 School Board members approved McGuire’s non-renewal without comment at their March 6 meeting. A formal contract non-renewal is uncommon in District 833 high school sports.

McGuire was put on leave in January after the district received “allegations” against him, District Communications Director Barb Brown said at the time.

There was no disciplinary action taken against McGuire, Brown said ahead of the School Board’s non-renewal vote.

Under state law, the school district cannot release details of a complaint filed against a teacher or coach if no disciplinary action was taken.

McGuire said he was “uninformed” regarding the situation and has requested more information “through the proper channels.”

“The district has not been forthcoming in advising me concerning why I was placed on administrative leave or why my contract was not renewed,” McGuire said in an email to the Bulletin.

Woodbury Activities Director Jason Gonnion would not discuss McGuire’s non-renewal.

“I'd like to decline commenting on this situation,” he wrote in a response to the Bulletin.

McGuire has taught kindergarten at Armstrong Elementary School in Cottage Grove since 1998. The coaching leave of absence, and the subsequent contract non-renewal, did not affect his teaching status.

McGuire joined Woodbury in September 2012 after serving as the head coach of the Academy of Holy Angels girls basketball team for two seasons. He also had been the head girls coach at Henry Sibley and the Minnesota Business Academy.

Gonnion praised McGuire when he was hired.

"We were extremely fortunate to get Nathan McGuire on board," Gonnion said in 2012. "He's really excited. He's been a joy to get to know through the interview process. I think it's a great fit for our school and community."

McGuire inherited a 10-18 team, but went 19-10 in his first season as coach, leading the Royals to the section championship.

The last game McGuire coached Woodbury was on Jan. 3 at East Ridge. The Royals went 1-17 following McGuire being placed on leave and finished 6-21 overall this past season.

McGuire took over for Lionel Jones, who resigned from the position after coaching just one year.
