An Eagle Scout since the age of 14, William Stout of Woodbury has done much to earn top honors.

But his most recent recognition comes after a full year of community service work that he takes pride in.

The 18-year-old was named Minnesota's VFW Scout of the Year, which puts him in the running for a national award.

"They were happy to see that I had a great service record ... I've organized tons of events," he said of the VFW.

One of the major events Stout organized a few years ago was a walk for Down Syndrome. The event was so well received that it became an annual fundraiser at Como Park in St. Paul.

"The first year I ever did it, I kind of got the troop involved," he said.

Stout's senior year at East Ridge High School was not only filled with academic work and college preparation, he sang at various church fundraisers and concerts, volunteered at a benefit for the Ann Haering family and other occasional community service projects with his troop.

"It makes me feel good," he said. "That's really all I can say. It benefits me but it doesn't benefit me in a way the stuff that I do helps other people."

He said the Haering benefit was especially touching.

Stout is anxious to learn if he made the cut for the national scout of the year, but in June he received a $500 scholarship and the award at the VFW state convention in Bloomington.

"To have something that I can keep for the rest of my life and I can say I achieved that ... I'm really happy. I'm so happy."

Stout is sponsored by Cottage Grove VFW Post 8752.
