Woodbury City Council: Century Ave. project on the docket
The Woodbury City Council will hold a public hearing at its Monday, March 31 meeting regarding the details of the planned Century Avenue improvement project.
The road construction project will span the length of Century Avenue from Woodbine Avenue to Lake Road. The project also calls for road improvements along Valley Creek Road from Century Avenue to Weir Drive.
Because Century Avenue is a county road that serves as the border between Woodbury and south Maplewood, the estimated $22 million project costs are planned to be split between the cities and Ramsey and Washington Counties. The city of Woodbury is planned to contribute $1.4 million, or 6 percent, to the project. Those funds are planned to come out of the city's capital improvements plan. The state Department of Transportation is expected to pick up the biggest portion of the tab by contributing $14.5 million to the project.
The construction project for Century Avenue has been in the works for more than five years. The city has held several meeting dating back to 2003 with the public for input on the project. The last neighborhood meeting on the proposed project was held March 13.
According to a city planning report, Century Avenue is planned be constructed as a four-lane divided roadway with curb and gutter, medians, left turn lanes, a sidewalk on the Maplewood side and a trail on the Woodbury side.
Valley Creek Road will also be constructed as a four-lane divided roadway with curb and gutter, medians, left and right turn lanes, shoulders, and trails on both sides of the roadway.
A traffic signal will be added at the Century Avenue and Valley Creek Road intersection along with the necessary turn lanes, and the traffic signal at Century Avenue and Upper Afton Road will be replaced. The project will also include storm sewer, stormwater ponds, infiltration basins, and water and sanitary sewer improvements.
The council is expected to vote later this spring on an order to begin the project later this year.
