Woodbury boys swimming & diving: Royals’ Bennett, Carr, Ho qualify for state meet
The Woodbury boys swimming and diving team is sending three swimmers and divers to the 2014 Class AA state meet.
Woodbury sophomore Will Ho is returning to the state meet for a second-straight year. Ho finished in second place in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1 minute, 0.12 seconds – which was also over two seconds under the state qualifying time and just .37 back of the first-place finisher, East Ridge senior Sam Scholz.
Ho finished 10th in last year’s Class AA state meet with a time of 1 minute, 0.86 seconds in the finals of the 100-yard breaststroke - just outside of an all-state (top eight) performance.Woodbury sophomore Brady Bennett punched his first ticket to the state meet, taking second place in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:01.07.Also, Woodbury sophomore diver Ian Carr reached the state meet, taking fourth place in the section diving competition. Carr had a score of 329.15. Stillwater diver Colin Eason took first with 384.05 points. Also in the diving contest, Woodbury freshman Tyler Long earned eighth place (302 points), sophomore Nick Gartner took 13th place (270.20) and freshman Mark Spannbauer finished in 15th place (244.05).Woodbury was close to sending more swimmers to state.Woodbury sophomore Garrett Norsten will have to wait another year to make his first state meet. Norsten was fourth in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:01.59 – just .86 off the state cut time. He also finished in fourth place in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:03.13 – only .73 from state.Also, the Royals 200-yard freestyle relay team of freshman Eric Fong, senior Eric Westfall, Bennett and Norsten took third place with a time of 1:31.17 – just .73 off the cut time.As a team, Woodbury took third place out of eight teams at the Section 4AA meet with 295 points. Though it only had two first-place finishes Stillwater used its profound depth to win the Section 4AA championship with 525 points. East Ridge took second place with 376 points.Woodbury finished third in Section 4AA last year as well, but Ho was the lone Royal to reach state.The 2013-14 Class AA state meet will take place this Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center in Minneapolis. The swim prelims will be held Thursday, the diving prelims will be Friday and all finals will be held Saturday night.
