Woodbury boys swimming & diving: Royals sunk by Hastings

The Woodbury boys swimming and diving team fell 97-84 to Hastings in a Suburban East Conference meet on Thursday, Jan. 9, in Hastings.

Hastings won nine of the meet’s first 10 events and mathematically clinched the win with two events remaining.

The loss dropped Woodbury’s record in dual meets to 2-2 on the year.

Woodbury’s lone first-place finish on the night was turned in by sophomore Ian Carr in the diving competition with a score of 196.90 to top Hastings’ Vova Tipler, who took second with a 194.95. Woodbury freshman Tyler Long placed third (160.55) and sophomore Nick Gartner was fourth (143.10) to give the Royals a total of 11 points in the event.

For the Royals, sophomore Austin Kinzie placed second in the 200-yard freestyle (1:53.92) and in the 100-yard butterfly (58.10) and helped the Royals’ 200-yard and 400-yard freestyle relay teams take second place with times of 1:36.35 and 3:32.64, respectively.

Woodbury senior Eric Westfall also was on the second-place 400 free relay team, helped the Royals’ 200-yard medley relay take second (1:47.43) and took third place in the 100 fly (58.32) and third in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:06.70).

Sophomore Brady Bennett earned second place in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:06.11), took fourth in the 200 IM (2:07.58), was on the Royals’ second-place 200 free relay team and second-place 400-yard free relay team.

Sophomore Garrett Norsten placed third in the 200-yard individual medley (2:07.34), earned second place in the 100-yard backstroke (1:00.41) and was on the Royals’ third-place 200 free relay team and the second-place 400-yard relay team.

Freshman Calvin Sroga earned second place in the 500-yard freestyle (5:19.26) and freshman Eric Fong was third in the event (5:26.16). Sroga also placed fourth in the 200-yard freestyle (1:59.95). Fong also placed third in the 50-yard freestyle (23.63) and was on the Royals’ second-place 200 medley relay team and third-place 200 free relay team.

Sophomore Will Ho placed fourth in the 100 back (1:01.45) and was part of the Royals’ second-place 200 medley relay team and third-place 400-yard relay team.

Next, the Royals host Mounds View on Thursday, Jan. 16, at Woodbury High School.
