Woodbury boys hockey: Royals edged by Cretin Derham-Hall

Woodbury overcame a 39-18 shot difference to keep Cretin-Derham Hall on the heels of their skates.

The Royals came short of upsetting the Suburban East contender in a 2-1 loss on Thursday, Dec. 19. Alec Wonsmos had tied the game for the Royals 1-1 on a power play goal, assisted by Jack Glaeser in the second period. Joe Dekker prevented overtime and put the Raiders ahead midway through the third period.

Royals goalie Austen Macalus had stopped 37 shots, and he had a .949 save percentage. The loss dropped the Royals to 3-5 overall and 1-5 in the SEC.

It came on the heels of a tough defensive performance against SEC front-runner White Bear Lake on Dec. 14. The Royals fell 4-1, but the held the Bears to a season-low 23 shots.

“Great team defensive effort,” Royals coach Wes Bolin said.

The Royals had trailed by only a goal with a couple minutes remaining in that game. They gave up a pair of goals with the goalie out to give them the extra offensive player.

This week, the Royals will play at a holiday tournament in South Saint Paul, starting Thursday. The field includes a few metro and out-state teams, including Class A runner-up Hermantown.
