A pair of third period goals cost the Woodbury Royals boys hockey team in a 5-3 loss to Suburban East Conference rival Park.

Tristan Mayer and Ian James had put the Royals up 2-0 early in the Tuesday, Jan. 21 contest, but the Wolfpack (4-14; 1-12 SEC) answered consistently with goals. Woodbury’s Jack Glaeser broke the 2-2 tied quickly in the second period on an unassisted goal for a 3-2 lead, but the Royals would never lead again.

Austen Macalus took the loss in goal with 29 saves for the Royals(6-14; 2-11 SEC). Jared Markeson, Mark Dornfeld and Josh Condon all had assists.

As a team, they had a small edged in shooting, 35-34, but going 0-6 on the power play stymied their changes. The Royals had killed off the first three of the Wolfpack’s power plays, but the fourth time around resulted in goal.

Getting back on track came as big challenge for the Royals when they had travel to Eastview (14-5) for a Friday, Jan. 24 non-conference game. The Lightning had their way in a 4-0 win over the Royals.

Balfany had a save percentage of .889 along with 32 saves. However, he had little offensive support as the Royals mustered only 16 shots.

Competition only steepens for the Royals this week when they host first-place Cretin-Derham Hall (13-4-1, 10-2-1 SEC) on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. Saturday will then bring round two of the Royals and East Ridge Raptors at Cottage Grove Ice Arena at 7:30 p.m.
