Woodbury boys hockey: Royals come up short with Stillwater in wild third period

A goal-filled third period alone provided plenty of action when Woodbury and Stillwater tangled on Thursday, Feb. 6.

Despite leading twice in the third, the Royals came up short in a 6-4 loss at Bielenberg Arena. Tied 2-2 Kyle Buche, put the Royals up 3-2 early in the third period on a power play goal, assisted by Nick Sheak and Jack Glaeser.

Peyton Gosso tied the game up again for the Ponies on a power play, 3-3 at the 8:01 mark. Jared Markeson put the Royals back ahead at 10:31 on an unassisted goal.

Mitch Reinke tied the game up for the Ponies, 4-4, at 13:40. The Ponies then scored two more goals in the final minute as the Royals fell 6-4.

Prior to the wild third period, the Royals had fought their way back from being down 2-0 to tie it. Mark Dornfeld scored on a power play goal, assisted by Jared Markeson and Sasha Choporov at 7:34 in the second period. Glaeser then found Buche for the first of his two goals as the Royals tied the game 2-2 at the 11:08 mark of the second period.

The Royals kept pace in the third period despite being out-shot 14-7 and 33-22 for the game. Power plays by the Ponies hurt the Royals, going 2-5 on the penalty kill. The Royals went 2-8 on their power play.

Austen Macalus took the loss in goal for the Royals with 27 saves and an .818 save percentage. Overall, the Royals dropped to 7-16 on the season and 4-13 in the Suburban East. They will close the season at home on Thursday, Feb. 13 against Rosemount (7-14-2, 2-11-2 SEC) at Bielenberg Arena.
