When science met art at Middleton
Dozens of young artists and scientists came out for Middleton Elementary's Science and Art Fair March 20.
Whether a student is a left brain thinker or a right brain thinker, the science and art fair allowed students to express their creativity and knowledge.
This event was initially just a science fair. Dana Misner, PTA volunteer coordinator, however, brought the idea of incorporating the two subject three years ago because art is such a popular activity among students.
"Kids generally love art and I thought it would be a fun way to showcase some of the work the students do outside of school," she said.
"It's also a learning opportunity for the students. They can see that art takes all forms from collage to sculpture to photography and they learn how fun and rewarding it can be to express themselves through their artwork."
The only requirement was that the students' work must be original, it makes no difference whether it is drawing, painting, sculpture, photography or mixed media art.
The science fair functions under much of the same guiding principles as the art fair -- to illustrate that you can have fun and learn at the same time.
"The fair is designed to help students realize that science is fun and to show them how it affects their everyday life," science fair organizer Sara Hower said. "Experiments and inventions are not just relegated to laboratories, but can reflect the search for everyday questions and answers. Science does not have to be intimidating."
